Jenn Travis Education Coordinator St. George Village Botanical Garden does an outstanding job of educating youth about the environment.

Educate children to treat Mother Earth with reverence and respect this Earth Day April 22 with Environmental Storytelling and Yoga. It's crucial that we reach our youth to forge green attitudes about consumption and waste to ensure a bright future for the planet and humanity.

I will be putting on Storytime Yoga in the Garden at the St. George Village Botanical Garden in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands on Wednesday, April 13 at 10 a.m. Meeting under the Kapok tree, this program for preschoolers and their parents will use the power of storytelling to entrance children with eco-symbolism, then reinforce it in their bodies with physical yoga.

By listening to stories from Greece, India and The Aztecs, children will learn about the relationship of the earth to their bodies, healthy organic eating, composting, gardening and the need to reduce, reuse and recycle (St. Croix landfills are currently at capacity and a garbage incinerator is proposed, to the ire of citizens.)

Take time to tell stories and teach yoga to the children in your community in the name of Mother Earth. Get into the rhythm of the seasons by paying more attention to the Earth and its cycles. Examine your consumption habits of plastic, cardboard, corporate "food" and examine your participation in unsustainable capitalism by participating more in the unofficial economy to strengthen your family and re-establish strong communities that are people-based rather than profit-based.

In addition to my E-Book Storytime Yoga in the Garden, find environmental stories to tell and yoga for kids:

Spinning Tales, Weaving Hope: Stories, Storytelling and Activities for Peace, Justice and the Environment.

Tales with Tails: Storytelling the Wonders of the Natural World by Kevin Strauss

Children's Book of Yoga: Games and Exercises mimic plants and animals and objects by Thia Luby

In memory of Frank Q. Solis, The Storytime Yoga Children's Mission, soon to be a non-profit, has made a donation to the St. George Village Botanical Garden to be used for children's educational programs. It is my goal that Storytime Yoga ultimately sponsor the entire children's program there and nurture our youth's eco-psychological and somatic relationship to the earth.
