Earlier this month four amazing women came from around the United States to train with me in Mythic Yoga and Storytime Yoga.We spent three and a half days together, beginning with a Mythic Yoga process. I taught Mythic Yoga classes, using the Hindu Myth of Narayana's Dream, in which Vishnu dreams the world into existence from his navel. We looked at the story in the body through the chakras, contemplated the images from the myth in the body as well as our "demons" and what we are bringing into creation. We connected our lives to that of the myth.Myths are public dreams, Joseph Campbell says. A mythic image has one foot in reality and one foot in the transcendent, he continues. By using these images, we can connect to that divine, mystery and awe that is us. By looking at our story, we are able to distinguish the ahamkara, and false self, peel it away and practice identifying with the true Self.I'm a big travel nut, so I take my participants out on tour. We have the lovely Pearl Street Mall where we ate lunch at Juanitas, then walked to Evan G. Fine Park along the river for master storytelling class and coaching. The next day we drove up to Rollinsville 45 minutes from Boulder to my artist friend Wendy Rochman's art studio/cabin. (Teddy Roosevelt stayed there!) She's an amazing paper artist and teacher in the public schools. We made mythic masks about what was arising, as well as hiked around the beautiful Roosevelt National Forest. Some people were resistant at first about the mask process. Resistance is always a sign. However, working with that resistance over time, as well as exploring our dreams every morning, provided amazing revelations and breakthroughs ultimately. Everything has its purpose, only the ego tries to cut away gifts. We got to eat at Kathmandu's Indian restaurant in Nederland. The best saag paneer anywhere! On Saturday we were full speed with a Storytime Yoga workshop as well as family class and kirtan. Then on Sunday, we picnicked in Chautauqua Park and participants told their stories as well as presented their masks, and were inducted into the Teacher's Circle as part of the League of Yogic Storytellers. All in all this was an unforgetable experience. Reconnecting to myth enables us to connect to our bodies and pscyhes. It gives meaning to our lives on a cyclical depth level, rather than a linear level. We participate in our environment rather than consume it and be consumed and emptied. We slow down to nature's speed, and connect ourselves to the power of the universe. And then we are truly awake and alive in the world. A great place to be.
