Teaching Peace to Children with Story and YogaTeaching Peace to Children is essential in today's world that is rocked with violence and nations engaged in eternal warfare.

We need peace in the name of the world's children. This is an urgent cry for all of us to unite in the name of peace.

Teach Children Peace,

Teach it with yoga and stories.

 

The following is from my book Storytime Yoga®: The Treasure in Your Heart - Stories and Yoga for Peaceful Children.

OM SHANTI - PEACE ON EARTH.

THE DOVE AND THE SPARROW – Unknown

A dove sat on a branch and watched a snowstorm. Later, a sparrow alighted next to the dove. The dove asked the sparrow, “Dear friend, tell me, what is the weight of a snowflake?”

The sparrow ruffled its feathers a bit and said, “Why, it’s nothing. Absolutely nothing at all.” The dove sat for a while contemplating this answer.

“Well, that is interesting,” he said finally. “For I saw the most amazing thing. I was watch- ing the snow fall, each tiny snowflake, one after another, as it gathered on a branch. More and more of these singular snowflakes gathered, until there was a great mound of snow on the branch. Still more snowflakes gathered, and then I saw the branch break. And you say that snowflakes weigh nothing.”

The sparrow sat watching the snowfall without saying anything.

“I wonder,” the dove said, “if that just like the snowflakes, all we need is one more voice, and we can finally have world peace.”

WORKING WITH THE STORY

ACTIVITIES

Contemplate this story during asana practice, meditation, or relaxation.

How can we help others become peaceful? Can we teach others meditation, share our experience as an example of how to find peace? What can we do to help achieve world peace? Does one person make a difference?

YOGA ASANA FOR KIDS

Find a tree, TREE POSE, vrksasana, and become a variety of birds. EAGLE POSE, garudasana. CROW POSE, bakasana. PIGEON POSE, eka pada rajakapotanasana. Come to rest in SEATED FORWARD BEND, paschimotanasana.

MEDITATION AND RELAXATION

Visualize a dove inside your heart. Hold that vision and fill the dove with love and dedication to work in service of world peace. See the whole world, every nation, at peace. Feel the peace inside your heart. Let the dove flutter away from the heart and into the sun, and know that this wish is granted.
