In 2006-2008 I taught Storytime Yoga® for Kids after-school programs at Creekside and Columbine Elementary schools in Boulder, Colorado in conjunction with The Wellness Initiative.
I loved seeing boys doing yoga, as it is a great athletic activity for young men who are otherwise not interested in the typical hyper-masculine ideals in U.S. culture of football or other competitive sports. I loved that they can participate in it without feeling it's too feminine or girly and realize that it's actually really masculine to embrace yoga!
I've noticed that this variation of salabhasana, locust pose, tends to be a favorite of young yogis in my classes, including my own son. I wonder if it was the emerging adolescence within getting in touch with their bodies and strength via yoga that made this pose so enjoyable and popular among boys practicing yoga.
I remember one session of an after school class being made up nearly entirely of young men in the fifth grade! I felt like teaching yoga for this age was one big pep talk about all the wonderful things about yoga and stories to navigate live with!
