It's always a nice feeling that it is blizzarding back home while you are vacationing some place warm! So it is, as I regenerate myself by getting away to see friends in Florida. One must escape their everyday life sometimes. I love Colorado, but winters can be harsh. Dry, brown, windy, cold. Makes a vata-prone person half-crazy! I definitely have to flee every winter. So here we are in sunny Florida.
I had the wonderful opportunity to spend time at a behavioral health center in Orlando, Florida, where a friend of mine, who is a psychologist, arranged for me to tell stories and teach a little bit of meditation and breathing and do some yoga for the day treatment patients there. I told a variety of stories that held the theme of change comes from within, and that if we can find this still point inside of us, we can start to move from there and find peace. My friend was impressed that they held their attention so well. Because during other programs, the patients will wander quite a bit. Storytelling has a way of doing that, whether a person has ADD, ADHD, depression, mental health problems or something else, storytelling and yoga connects one with the body. Meditation calms the mind, breath calms the mind. And one can self-reflect on their life by listening to the stories.
We spent the morning at the Jacksonville zoo with an old friend. Tomorrow we are heading back to Orlando to pick up my psychologist friend to hang out at their beach house. The ocean, as all nature, is very healing.
This blizzard in Colorado is symbolic. Six years ago this week my husband committed suicide right after the last blizzard we had. Perhaps being in Florida signals a new birth. I'll be ready to return to Colorado renewed and ready to start my Storytime Yoga trainings once again, teaching the joy and peace of yoga and stories to children and adults everywhere
