I keep coming across gazillions of things I did in the past as a Storytime Yoga® for kids teacher all these years. Which includes make up little chants and so forth for the preschools that hire me. I like to set things to the theme. I wrote a previous post about the ocean stories poem that I created for Adventure Montessori in Westminster, Colorado in 2005 when I was hired to teach Storytime Yoga® for kids classes there.

I had a request for solar system stories. So besides a bunch of stories, I created this poem to open up the 1/2 program I designed for the preschoolers.

How to Use the Poem in Kids Yoga

• I used this as a warm up and introduction before doing more storytelling. An introduction helps you to connect with kids and also help them feel secure and trust you.

• I guide them in introducing the refrain, and how to do it. I tell them, "When I say

Shing-a-ling-a-high

Shing-a-ling-a-low

Around the solar system we go

Then you join in too!"

• Make up a little hand movement, clapping, lap slapping, swaying, anything. Teach it to the kids. Urge them to join in with the movement when called for.

• I like to TELL THE WHOLE STORY OR POEM FIRST. Because that engages listening and attention. In my book Storytime Yoga® Teaching Yoga to Children Through Story, I have the original story of The Warrior's Journey, which is the only story in which I act out the story as it is told. Otherwise I prefer listening for the yoga of attention as well as the stillness it brings.

• I do use simple movement to keep young preschoolers engaged and focused. Kids are either sitting or standing for the intro. So with words like, "love for everyone" I will use my arms to embrace myself and give myself a hug. Kids can do that too! Give yourself a hug! During the refrain, I raise hands up high, and then them low, and ask kids to follow. For "big, big, BIG" I will use my arms to make sizes bigger progressively in pantomime. For "cold as can be" grasp body with arms and shiver pantomime.

• Really your imagination is your creation. Use more stories of the ocean, or act this one out with yoga and bring in those fish poses, crab poses, mermaid poses. That's the power of ORAL telling. Your creativity EXPLODES. Because the pictures were not made for you to consume externally. The pictures were created INTERNALLY! THAT'S THE YOGA! What few people realize about Storytime Yoga® and why it's so powerful. You have to create the images within the body yourself!

Storytime Yoga® for Kids Sydney Solis Solar System Poem for Preschool Kids

Connect kids to the solar system with a poem to move to. Outer space is inner space!

The Solar System Chant Poem
for Children's Yoga

By Sydney Solis

The Sun and the Moon sing a little tune
All of the planets join in, too!

Shing-a-ling-a-high
Shing-a-ling-a-low
Around the solar system we go

Mercury is first
Closest to the sun
Then comes Venus with love for everyone

Shing-a-ling-a-high
Shing-a-ling-a-low
Around the solar system we go

Now comes the earth, home sweet home
Beyond is Mars, it’s red you know

Shing-a-ling-a-high
Shing-a-ling-a-low
Around the solar system we go

Jupiter is next, it’s big, BIG BIG!
All of Saturn’s rings do a little jig

Shing-a-ling-a-high
Shing-a-ling-a-low
Around the solar system we go

Sun Salutation chant always a great poem to include for Solar System themed classes in kids yoga!

Storytime Yoga® for Kids
Sun Salutation chant always a great poem to include for Solar System themed classes in kids yoga!

Neptune is out there, God of the sea
Uranus’s farther, cold as can be

Finally is Pluto, far far away
And beyond is infinity, but that’s enough for today

On the edge of the solar system, now we’ll send
A very special wish to family and friends.

Now make a wish! Blow that wish to the world!
